Certified Carbon Professional

Please note that you cannot apply online to become a Certified Carbon Professional or Fellow of the Association of Carbon Professionals.

A Certified Carbon Professional represents a professional standard of knowledge, understanding and experience in the field of carbon management.

A Certified Carbon Professional is typically a carbon practitioner that contributes a significant proportion of their work time to the goal of carbon mitigation and or adaptation and that give their time to increase and improve the carbon management knowledge and practices of their business, clients, staff and/or industry. Successful candidates are entitled to use the suffix CCP in recognition of this.

Reasons for you to become a Certified Carbon Professional

  • Employers increasingly require professional qualifications for those seeking work in carbon management related fields
  • It underpins and supports your career development
  • Being certified as a Carbon Professional enables you to demonstrate to colleagues, clients, employers, potential employers and others that you have a broad ranging knowledge understanding and experience in the field of Carbon management. In addition, that this knowledge and understanding has been assessed by an independent organisation
  • You will be part of a growing group of carbon professionals; with opportunities to network and collaborate
  • Like our other levels you will receive our standard membership benefits, including, access to events & webinars

How do I become a Certified Carbon Professional ?
To achieve CCP status the applicant has to complete the ACP Certified Carbon Professional Application Process. Details of that process can be found here.

To assess if you have the right level of understanding and knowledge to apply for certification the profile below has been developed to assist you:

Profile – Works on reducing carbon emissions either directly, or indirectly through offsets and or renewable energy and carbon markets, with the aim of speeding the transition to a low carbon economy. He or she will have expertise in their specific area of work and a broad knowledge of the low carbon sector as a whole.  Job roles  (not exhaustive) can range from Carbon Manager, Energy manager, renewable energy specialists, climate change policy officers, members of climate change teams within public and private sector organisations, CDM project evaluators, carbon management consultants, carbon asset managers

Education – Likely to hold an undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant area e.g. Carbon Management, Carbon Finance, Environmental Management, Sustainability, Renewable Energy Systems, Carbon Capture and Storage, other engineering and science programmes etc.

Experience – Likely to have gained sufficient experience and progression to be operating at a responsible level within the organisation in a role that includes reducing carbon emissions either directly or indirectly. Professional Development – Applicants should maintain a detailed record of their development, responsibilities and experience, verified by superiors or mentors. This applies to employment but may also begin during some of the formal education referred to above, for example industrial placement during a higher education course, or alongside part-time study.

Maintaining Competence – Candidates will be required to show evidence that they have a plan to continue to maintain their competence. Maintenance of the ‘Member’ title is by means of annual CPD reporting.

Professional Behaviour – Certified Carbon professionals will be expected to observe the requirements of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Association of Carbon Professionals. There is no time period for qualification but it is unlikely that anyone with less than 3  years’ experience in reducing carbon emissions will have attained the necessary levels of competence. The requirements for this level of membership are akin to the ‘Chartered’ membership level of other professional bodies such as the Energy Institute, CIWEM or full member in IEMA. There is currently one route to CCP status within ACP and that is application by existing Affiliate members. Through a written application and an interview process, a CCP applicant has to successfully demonstrate that they:

  • Meet the Mandatory Standards of Competence Criteria for membership
  • Have a high standard of knowledge and understanding and the ability to apply it effectively in practice
  • Are able to effectively communicate sound carbon management practice to others both internally and externally
  • Possess a minimum of (or equivalent to) three years full time experience

For more details go to mandatory competency criteria, notes on the application process and guidance on the personal review process.
